Jambo!! Day 4
Wednesday, 07 July 2010 22:48
Day 4 Our last day in Mombasa proved to be another inspiring challenge.

We spent our final day here in Mombasa at the New Life Feeding Center & Academy. It's very, very difficult to articulate the differences in these three days and these three centers other than to say that each day God showed up in a new & fresh way.

To be honest I think many of us were so emotionally & spiritually worn out that we were a little weary of going back to another feeding center to have our hearts torn up all over again. Yet, we prayed up & loaded the bus & set out! And God showed up yet again showing us the practical implications of His Great LOVE for us. Honestly, today was not the most spiritual or emotional day for me at all, in fact it was almost as if God wanted to humor me today and allow me to laugh & enjoy His creation & find the humor in it. I know, you're thinking "Scott, you're seeing poverty & needy children and you're finding this funny?" Well, I believe my sovereign & perfect God knew exactly what I needed today, so, he allowed me to see the beauty of His creation through humor.

Just a couple of things that made me laugh today...
1) A beautiful little girl attached herself to Joel Walker when we arrived today and stayed with him for the first hour that we were there. During the assembly time when all of the children came & sang for us this little girl climbed up and sat in Joel's lap, about half way through the assembly I hear a big yelp come from over in the corner & several of the kids are laughing, well the little girl, who was probably about 2 or 3 years old had peed all over Joel's leg. It was Hilarious!! Joel was so great, he said he had so fallen in love with this sweet little girl that he did not care that she had just peed on him. It really was a very sweet, but very funny moment!
2) This one comes at my own expense, but if you know me very well you know that I HATE flying anything...birds, bees, wasps, etc. And if you know anything about Africa it's sort of like Texas...EVERYTHING is bigger including their wasps, (also check out Daniel Whisnant's Facebook photos for the ginormous spider that was the size of a human hand). Well, during this same assembly there were these wasps that were flying around that had come from the pits of Hell. So, the HS students who knew my phobia thought this was hilarious as I tried to pay attention to the children but also tried to keep a close eye on the Tyranasaurus Wasp that kept flying way too close to me. Well, about the time I quit paying attention to the wasp and I was minding my own business, whose ear does it decide to fly into, here's a hint - MINE. Needless to say I freaked a little bit, but let it be known that big, bad Austin Reynolds freaked out as well! I was unable to enjoy the remainder of the assembly.

3) The last thing that I truly got a good laugh out of was the gigantic grasshopper that some of the little girls caught and then proceeded to chase our HS girls with. Taylor, Heather, Kaydawn, Kalie, Abby & Nichole were all running scared as these little girls taunted them with a gigantic grasshopper. It was so much fun to watch as these little African children screamed and laughed while they chased these American teenagers around the play yard. Of course I found so much enjoyment out of this that I helped the African girls come up behind the HS girls and scare them. Don't give me any heck about this because these are the same HS students that had been laughing at me & the wasp.

Well, as you can see there really aren't any deep spiritual truths in my blog tonight, but I hope that you shared a laugh or a smile with me as you read of a few of our encounters today!!

I am not sure what our hotel in Nairobi will have as far as Internet & wifi, so this may be my last post for a few days, however, here is our schedule through the weekend so that you can continue to pray...
